Is it true that there are few beaches in the south of France?

I was thinking of going to Cote D'Azur. Now, I read that it is not really a beach destination. Actually, they said that it is not really a beach destination, and that people go there for the culture, nightlife, excellent hotels, etc. I've been on Google Streetview and it seems that it is mostly cliffs. Well, you can't get a really good impression since most of the coast roads are not on Streetview.
